Scenario:
You are setting up a new laptop with Windows XP. You may have used a disk image from another laptop that used a SoundMax sound card. Even though you removed the SoundMax software, there is a registry key that remains and causes a conflict with the IDT drivers.
Solution:
Open Regedit
Locate this service :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesAEAudio
and delete the whole key.
Also delete the file C:windowssystem32driversAEAudio.sys

Check the registry for drivers related to your old sound card. It may not match these instructions exactly.
