Files needed to play videos are not installed – Windows 7 Media Center
I set up a brand new Dell Studio 520 Desktop with integrated Intel Video card and HDMI port, connected to my plasma TV. I swapped the hard drive out of my old machine so that I would not have to reinstall everything. It worked great until I went to watch TV on Media Center. It would play 1 second of video and then say, “Files needed to play videos are not installed.” It suggested restarting Media Center or the computer. This was no help.
The problem turned out to be the Intel video card. It has only 32MB of shared RAM by default. I increased it to 128MB in the BIOS but this did not help. So I got out my $50 video card from my old computer with 512MB of RAM and installed it in my new computer. It works great now.
