mdspamd.exe is Processing Mail Very Slowly

Mail is backing up in the Local Queue on the server.  Here are some things to try.

  • Set “Is DNS available” to “No” (under “Security” | “Spam Filter” | “Options”). If this fixes your issue, then it is due to a DNS lookup issue. Either lookups are taking too long or timing out. Consider running a local DNS cache.
  • Disable Bayesian Learning (under “Security” | “Spam Filter” | “Bayesian Classification”). If this fixes the issue, your Bayesian database is corrupted and needs to be rebuilt.
  • Disable the Spam filter entirely (under “Security” | “Spam Filter” | “Spam Filter”). This prevents MDSpamD.exe from even launching. If this fixes your issue then your problem is with SpamAssassin. Perhaps SpamAssassin need to be rebuilt or you have created your own custom rules that are causing your backlog problem.
  • Disable the content filter rules processing engine (under “Security” | “Content Filter…” | “Rules”). If this fixes your
  • Disable SecurityPlus. (Do this only as a last resort and only if your workstations have a an antivirus solution in place. The settings are under “Security” | “Antivirus”.) If this fixes the issue, then the problem lies with SecurityPlus.

    • In my experience the delays tend to be related to DNS.  You can disable the DNS items above and see if the queue clears.
